Sony FE 85mm F1.4 GM lens is SONY's newly introducing premium semi-telephoto prime lens and it produces beautiful bokeh expression and excellent resolution even to the peripheries with application of Nano AR coating and XA lens.

It is a GM lens that is designed to focus more for specialized shooting, and thus it is premium portrait lens equipped with 85mm focal distance and bright aperture of F1.4 which are attractive for portrait shooting and for that it is of interest of many users.

Sony FE 85mm F1.4 GM lens is a semi-telephoto prime lens for mirrorless camera that responds to Full-frame. The 85mm focal length shows field angle of the opposite angle of 29' so it is attractive lens for portrait shooting use. The lens composition is of 11 element 8 group XA lens 1 set, 3 sets of ED lens so it enables beautiful bokeh expression, excellent definition, and aberration controlling ability, and it is improved with penetration by minimizing the light reflection through Nano AR coating. With bright aperture of F1.4 it is advantageous for dark inside shooting and also the depth expression is very excellent. It has farther focal point than ZEISS FE 55mm F1.8 lens which is popular along with the a7 series, and it employs bright aperture so it gets users with pictures of maximized shallow depth of field. AF motor loads SSM motor and this makes the focus lens move faster when taking pictures, and when shooting films the focus lens moves slower to reduce the wobbling effect. Also you can change the aperture value softly by using the aperture ring of the lens with Non-click aperture for film shooting. FE 85mm F1.4 GM lens employs SSM motor. AF drive speed, when tested on Sony a7RII, shows normal standard as a large caliber lens that has bright aperture in AF-S/AF-C mode, and when shooting images it operates in contrast AF with AF-C so the drive speed gets slower and the focus smoothly moves. As for the drive noise, because it has to move large caliber lens, is quite bigger than normal mirrorless lenses but if compared with lenses for DSLR, its noise would seem quite fine.

This lens is advantageous in securing shutter speed by its employing of F1.4 full aperture, and it shows excellent definition even when shooting in F1.4 full aperture. It is a Full-frame lens and it shows great background fading skill when doing medium shot, and it expresses the spaciousness quite well when doing full shots. There are times when the details are not well expressed even if you get the focus right because the depth became too thin when doing close-up shots because it has bright aperture value in semi-telephoto. In such times you can get excellent sharpness and details even just by tightening the aperture to F2.8.

The maximum amount of pixel needed to mark one distinguishable black and white line is shown. The cycle decreases as the resolution increases.

Result

The value of resolution marked as LW/PH is shown. It is included in 'the maximum amount of distinguishable black and white line that fully fills up the height of output' or 'the doubled value which cycle divided the height of output' and is effected by all number of camera pixel and lens resolution. This test is value decipher according to the logic of program which may have difference with value that is decipherable visually through indicated numbers on the guideline.

Result

It has recorded very excellent resolution that exceeds over the maximum definition of 4000LW/PH maximum in every interval from F1.4 full aperture to F16 in A7RII of about 42.4 million pixels. As for the definition of the peripheries it can't be converted into numbers but you can see that the level is quite high in every area of the aperture just by looking at it. Result

This lens shows 0.44% barrel distortion in 85mm. It can be said that the distortion restraint is quite good given that it is semi-telephoto prime lens.

It is a lens that selected circular aperture so its bokeh has tendency of maintaining the circular form even when the aperture tightens. It applies XA lens that has surface precision of 0.01 micron so when expressing bokeh the rim is clearly expressed and you can see that the description of the inside is also very clean.

Vignetting is the most in F1.4 full aperture and it lessens as the aperture is tightened and from after F2.8 it almost has no effect. As for Sony cameras if you use dark correction through the lens correction function through the software you can reduce the decreasing of intensity of radiation of peripheries, but this is only able in JPEG images.

SONY FE 85mm F1.4 GM lens is E mount semi-telephoto lens that responds to Full-frame mirrorless camera. Since it is the first time introduced as GM, Sony's new premium lens line-up, it is applied largely with Sony's latest lens technique such as Nano AR Coating, XA lens, and SSM Motor, etc. Focal length of 85mm provides 29 degrees of field angle in Full-frame mirrorless cameras, and when using in APS-C standard camera it provides field angle of 19 degrees. This is a very popular field angle for shooting portraits and considering the fact that lenses with bright aperture among the Sony mirrorless camera lens line-up are mostly lined up in standard field angle, this is lens of field angle quite attractive to many users. Lens composition is 11 element 8 group, and it uses 1 set of XA lens and 3 of ED lens. It is noticeable that it uses just one set of XA lens which has minute surface precision of 0.01 Micron of an aspheric lens, and it shows the best level of beautiful yet clear bokeh expression among the same level lenses by applying bokeh simulation in the designing step. It is easy to secure shutter speed even in condition of low intensity of illumination because the aperture value has fast aperture of F1.4, and it enables excellent swallow depth of field. The definition shows very good quality definition over all areas per aperture so it is very practical, and vignetting is quite shown in full aperture and it is shown lessen and almost none from after F2.8. This lens shows very excellent resolution in A7R II of 42,4MP, and it shows high quality not only in the central area but also in the peripheries so it is perfect as the high definition lens that counters the super-high pixel bodies.
