What does this download do?

This utility is only for use with the products identified and sold in Asia Pacific. Not all models are sold in all countries.

What does this do?
This utility upgrades the Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theatre System firmware to version 787 and provides the following benefits:

Improvement over firmware version 756:

  • Improves YouTube connectivity.
  • Adds the ability to play 1080/60p/50p video files produced by Cyber-shot and Handycam video.
  • Improves BD-ROM playability.
  • Improves HDMI connectivity.
  • Resolves an uncommon issue where the Blu-ray Disc player connects to the Internet even when setting "Do not allow internet connection"

Benefits provided by previous upgrades and included in version 787:

  • BD-ROM playability improvement.
  • Resolves an uncommon issue where the xross media bar language may switch to English after the Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theatre System starts up.

Check the Current Firmware Version 

  1. Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System is connected.
  2. Power on the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System.
  3. Press the "FUNCTION" button repeatedly until "BD/DVD" function appears in the front panel display.
  4. If the system starts to play a disc, press the "STOP" button and wait until the xross media bar™ menu is displayed on the television before proceeding.
  5. Use the arrow keys on the remote control to select "Setup" – "System Settings", and then press the ENTER button.
  6. Use the arrow keys to select "System Information", and then press the ENTER button.
  7. The firmware version currently installed on the Blu-ray Disc /DVD Home Theatre System will be listed on the television screen.

    If the last three digits of the version number are 787 or higher, it is not necessary to install this firmware upgrade.

How To Get the Firmware upgrade

There are three ways to obtain the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System firmware upgrade:

Network upgrade: 

  • The Network upgrade operation is straightforward, so it is highly recommended that you use the Network upgrade method.
  • You will need to connect the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System to your Internet source using an Ethernet cable.
  • Please see the Network upgrade Instructions section, for more information.

Create an upgrade Disc:

  • If you cannot connect the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System to your Internet source, please use the disc upgrade method.
  • Please click the button at the bottom of this page to download the firmware upgrade.
  • Please see the Download the Firmware and Create an upgrade Disc section, for more information.
  • A drive with CD disc burning capability, and a new blank CD-R disc are required to create the upgrade disc.

Request an upgrade Disc

  • If you cannot connect the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System to your Internet source, please use the disc upgrade method.
  • If you cannot create a CD on your computer, Sony can provide a disc containing the firmware upgrade. Please contact Sony.
  • After you receive the disc, please see the Disc upgrade Instructions section, for more information.

Network Upgrade Instructions

The Network upgrade operation is straightforward, so it is highly recommended that you use the Network upgrade method to upgrade the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System firmware.

Important Notes

  • If you have not done so already, please check the current firmware version to determine if this firmware upgrade is needed for your Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System.
  • WARNING!! Please follow the upgrade instructions carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may interrupt the upgrade process and may cause the Blu-ray Disc /DVD Home Theatre System to be unresponsive or to require repair.
  • WARNING!! Do not power off the Blu-ray Disc /DVD Home Theatre System or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Loss of power during the installation of the firmware upgrade may cause the Blu-ray Disc /DVD Home Theatre System to be unresponsive or to require repair.
  • In order to use this upgrade method it is necessary to have the system correctly connected to an active Internet connection.
    Note: If you cannot connect the system to your Internet source, please see the How To Get the Firmware upgrade section above for information about firmware upgrade disc options.
  • In order to perform the firmware upgrade, it is necessary to have the system correctly connected to a compatible television.
  • It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.

Firmware upgrade Instructions
WARNING!! Please follow the upgrade instructions carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may interrupt the upgrade process and may cause the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System to be unresponsive or to require repair.

Note: The firmware upgrade process usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on system configuration and network connection.

  1. Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System is connected.
  2. Connect the "LAN(100)" terminal on the system to your Internet source using an Ethernet cable.
  3. Power on the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System.
  4. If there is a disc in the system, please remove the disc.
  5. Press the "FUNCTION" button repeatedly until "BD/DVD" function appears in the front panel display. .
    WARNING!! Cannot update it except for "BD/DVD" Function.
  6. At the xross media bar™ menu, use the arrow keys on the remote control to select "Setup" – "System Settings", and then press the ENTER button.
  7. Use the arrow keys to select "Quick Start Mode" and make sure that the "Quick Start Mode" is set to "Off".
    Note: If the "Quick Start Mode" is set to "On", change the setting to "Off". Otherwise, the firmware upgrade may not succeed.
  8. Use the arrow keys on the remote control to select "Setup" - "Network upgrade" and then press the ENTER button.
  9. The message "Perform version upgrade?" is displayed on the television.
  10. Select "OK" and then press the ENTER button.
  11. The download process starts and the download screen is displayed on the television.
  12. During the download the message indicating the progress as " */9" is displayed on the television.
    Note: The "*" changes to "0" through "9," indicating the download progress.
  13. After the download is complete, the upgrade starts and "UPDATING" appears on the front panel display.
  14. While the upgrade is installed, the message " UPDATING " is displayed on the front display.
  15. The firmware upgrade is complete when "COMPLETE" appears on the front panel display.
    WARNING!! Do not operate or power off the system until this message is displayed. Doing so may cause the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre system to be unresponsive or to require repair. 
  16. The Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System will automatically power off.
  17. Power on the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System.
  18. Check the current firmware version to confirm that the upgrade has successfully installed.
    Note: If the last three digits of the version number are 787, the firmware upgrade was successful.

Network Firmware upgrade FAQ

  1. "Update" and "INCOMPLETE" are displayed alternately on the front panel display. 
    Please perform the following procedure:
    1. Disconnect the AC power cord (mains lead) from the wall outlet (mains), then reconnect after several minutes.
    2. Power on the Blu-ray Disc /DVD Home Theatre System.
    3. Follow the Network upgrade Instructions again.
    If the issue persists after performing the upgrade again, please contact Sony.
  2. When running network upgrade, the television displays the message, "Connection status cannot be confirmed" and you cannot perform the firmware upgrade. 
    There may be a problem with the network connection. Verify that the network connection and settings are correct.
    1. Check the Ethernet cable to make sure it is securely connected to the "LAN(100)" terminal on the unit and to the Internet source.
    2. Check the Blu-ray Disc /DVD Home Theatre System network settings and confirm that the system has its own IP address.
    Note: If you use a proxy server, enter the IP address of the proxy server you use, instead of the proxy host name, in the "Proxy Server" input field.
    3. Follow the Network upgrade Instructions again.
  3. The power was shut down during the upgrade process.
    Power on the Blu-ray Disc / DVD Home Theatre System, and then follow the Network upgrade Instructions again.
  4. The network upgrade process has two parts, first the download and then the upgrade. If, after the download part is finished, the firmware upgrade process is still not finished after running after more than 30 minutes. 
    Please perform the following procedure:
    1. Disconnect the AC power cord (mains lead) from the wall outlet (mains), then reconnect after several minutes.
    2. Turn on the power of the Blu-ray Disc/DVD Home Theatre System.
    3. Please execute network upgrade procedure again.
    If the symptom does not improve after re-upgrade, please contact Sony. 
  5. The system does not output 3D signal after 3D update even if the system is connected to 3D-compatible TV.
    Connect 3D-compatible TV with an HDMI connection.
    Perform following:
    1. Press HOME. The home menu appears on the TV screen.
    2. Press /support/attachments/389182/tvremotearrows to select Setup.
    3. Press /support/attachments/389182/tvremotearrows to select Screen Settings, then press Enter.
    4. Press /support/attachments/389182/tvremotearrows to select Output Video Format, then press Enter.
    5. Press /support/attachments/389182/tvremotearrows to select HDMI, then press Enter.
    6. Select Auto, and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the setup.

Click on the button below only if you are updating the firmware by creating an upgrade Disc.
