Windows® Update program is an online function which helps in keeping the Microsoft® Operating System with the latest updates available. It is recommended to install all security-related updated offered through this program so to ensure protection and smooth-running of the computer.

Note:

Detailed testing of these updates is not being performed on every Sony VAIO computer. Therefore, Sony does not guarantee the full compatibility of all Sony VAIO computers after installing these updates. Before installing any updates, please review the purpose of each update before proceeding with the installation.

To check if any updates are available for the computer's Operating System, please follow the steps below:

Windows® Update

1. Go to URL: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/default.htm

2. When the Welcome to Windows® Update page appears, click Scan for Updates and Windows® Update will begin to search for available updates.

3. Once the Search is done, the available updates for the computer will appear under the Pick updates to install menu:

Critical Updates and Service Packs
These updates consist of security fixes and other important updates for keeping the computer safe and secure. Sony recommends to install all of these updates.

Operating System Utility or Performance Enhancement
These updates are related to the bundled utilities and performance of the Windows® operating systems. Sony recommends to install these updates only as and when it is needed.

Drivers Updates
These updates are for OEM (other equipment manufacturer) and third party vendor products. Sony does not recommend to install these drivers and updates. Sony VAIO computers are designed to use with Sony's bundled version of the Windows Operating System. Therefore, installing these updates may result in unexpected system behavior and eventually causes malfunctions.

4. Click Review and Install Updates, select the updates to be installed and click Install Now.

1. The amount of time required to download the Windows® Update file may vary by the size of the file and the Internet connection speed.
2. Once Windows® Update program has begun, do not cancel the installation during the installation process as this may cause malfunctions to the computer.
