Information about HDD issue affecting VAIO Notebook Computer VPCS117 series

Dear valued VAIO customers,

Sony has recently identified that a number of VAIO Notebook Computers of model VPCS117 series may incorrectly display the hard disk drive capacity by using either the Computer Management - Disk Management Tool or the Hard disk drive property Windows. The correct capacity HDD was installed in the computer but Windows is not recognizing the full capacity. The issue relates to an error being made when formatting the computer during manufacture and wrongly sizing the HDD. This can be checked and resolved easily by following the steps detailed below.

You can check if your product is displaying the correct or incorrect hard disk drive size by utilizing the instructions in the section below titled How to confirm hard disk drive size.

Affected VAIO Notebook Computer models:
VPCS117GA
VPCS117GG
VPCS117GK
VPCS117GW

How to confirm hard disk drive size
Please follow the steps to open the “Disk Management” window:
1. Click the Windows Start icon .
2. Select Control Panel
3. Select System and Security
4. Select Administrative Tools
5. Select Computer Management
6. Select Disk Management

Your model is affected if you can find discrepancies in the HDD size of *1 and *2 as indicated below in the Disk Management window.
Correct values for *1 and *2 are:
*1 = 448.xx GB
*2 = 448.xx GB
Please refer to the image below to understand where to locate these values.

If your VAIO Notebook Computer is displaying the values as indicated, then you are not affected and no further action is required. If however your VAIO Notebook Computer is displaying any values other than those indicated, you will need to follow the steps below to easily resolve the issue.

NOTE: Please make sure you back-up your data before proceeding

• Download the Hard Disk Drive utility and run it on your computer or;
• Use the Microsoft Windows method to Shrink and Extend the Volume of the drive manually
