Tips for long, safe battery use.
Basic battery information
Battery life
As you know, battery life is shortened by constant charging and discharging. In fact, charging capacity can diminish approximately 50% after two years of repeated daily changing and discharging.* This happens to a notebook PC that is always connected to an AC adapter, typically in home use. While battery degradation cannot be prevented, speed of degradation* can be significantly slowed by following a few simple tips.

* Speed of degradation varies with variety of battery, electrical voltage, and environmental temperature. Battery life is not guaranteed.

100% charged new battery can be used for 10 hours.
After continuous usage for years, the same 100% charged battery can be used for only 5 hours.
Battery health indications
The function on the right shows battery performance (indicating when it’s time to replace the battery). Charging capacity falls due to the duration of use. The charging performance of the battery changes from Good to Fair, Poor, or Critical. A battery should be replaced when its charging performance is Poor.
Charge that weak battery!
If a degraded battery is continuously used, inner parts may deteriorate, possibly affecting safe use. Therefore, changing to a new battery is recommended.

Battery Care Function
Battery degradation can be slowed by limiting battery charge up to 80% of capacity. This function extends the battery life approximately 1.5 times* longer.
Battery Care Function (80%)
Battery life will be about 20% shorter than a fully charged battery. However, this mode slows battery degradation and is effective if you usually use the computer with the battery.
Battery Care Function (50%)
Battery life will be about 50% shorter than a fully charged battery. However, this mode slows battery degradation and is more effective if you usually use the computer with the AC adapter.

The Battery Care Function extends the battery life approximately 1.5 times* longer than a battery without this care function setting.

Charge that weak battery!
• Do not expose battery pack and notebook PC to high temperatures.
• Unplug the AC adapter if you are not using VAIO for an extended period.
Cautions for battery pack storage
• When a battery pack may be unused for more than one month, use approximately 50% charging capacity. Remove the battery from VAIO and keep it in a cool, dark place with low humidity.
• Keep a battery in a safe place to prevent damage and shock.
• Every six months, charge a battery to approximately 50% capacity to prevent excess discharge.
• When storing a battery, put it in a plastic bag to prevent battery short out. Then, position battery packs to avoid overlap and place in a non-conductive container, such as a cardboard box.
Automatic indication of degraded battery condition
Depending on your usage, VAIO recommends using the Battery Care Function in the floating window (shown below). This indicates battery degradation, so you can use your battery longer. The floating window is automatically displayed as the default setting, but it can also be hidden from view.

Good (green) The charging performance of the battery is good.
The charging performance of the battery deteriorates little by little due to factors such as the number of charges and usage period. Efficient use can extend the battery life.
Battery charging performance is good.
Fair (green) The charging performance of the battery has begun to deteriorate
The charging performance of the battery deteriorates little by little due to factors such as the number of charges and usage period. Efficient use can extend the battery life.
The charging performance of the battery has begun to deteriorate.
Poor (yellow) The charging performance of the battery has deteriorated.
The charging performance of the battery deteriorates due to factors such as the number of charges and usage period. We recommend replacing the battery with a new one.
The charging performance of the battery has deteriorated.
Critical (red) Replace the battery with a new one.
The charging performance of the battery has deteriorated significantly compared with time of purchase. Replace the battery with a new one.
