Sony Presents Two Cyber-shot H-series Cameras With New And Advanced Imaging Technologies
The flagship DSC-HX1 is the world’s first camera with high-speed continuous shooting of up to 10 frames per second, while the DSC-H20 is equipped with 10x optical zoom

(Singapore, 12 March 2009) – Sony Electronics Asia Pacific expands its Cyber-shot® H-series to include the new flagship DSC-HX1 and compact high zoom model DSC-H20. Impressively, the new DSC-HX1 is the world’s first compact digital still camera to allow continuous high-speed shooting at up to 10 frames per second, and also offers a new Sweep Panorama mode that enables easy capture of breathtaking panoramic scenes with one effortless press-and-sweep motion. Both features are the result of the combination of Sony’s new Exmor™ CMOS Sensor with the ultra fast BIONZ™ imaging processor of the DSC-HX1, ensuring users will never miss another precious moment.

Featuring a retractable Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens that covers a 2cm macro to 10x optical zoom and the new Intelligent Auto mode, the Cyber-shot DSC-H20 also offers superior clarity for a compact camera. The camera is also equipped with an impressive 720 High Definition (HD) movie shooting and playback function.

“Leading the drive for innovation, Sony continues to develop superior imaging capabilities that can be integrated into compact cameras for today’s consumers,” says Mr. Tatsuo Takahashi, General Manager, Digital Imaging Marketing Division, Sony Electronics Asia Pacific. “The latest semi-professional Cyber-shot DSC-HX1 is the world’s first digital still camera with high-speed continuous shooting of up to 10 frames per second while the DSC-H20 impresses with new Intelligent Auto function for outstanding imaging results at optimal settings every time.”

With Sony’s enhanced imaging and processing technologies, users can now capture images with almost double the clarity and detail, complete with a wider range of shooting features. Combining Sony’s exclusive Exmor CMOS Sensor with the ultra fast BIONZ imaging processor, the DSC-HX1 delivers high-speed continuous shooting of up to 10 frames per second at 9.1-megapixel resolution with outstanding colour reproduction and minimized noise. Leveraging on one of the advantages of Sony’s Alpha D-SLR cameras, the DSC-HX1 also debuts the renowned G Lens with extended zoom range for greater user flexibility in taking long distance shots. Working in tandem with the Exmor CMOS Sensor and BIONZ imaging processor, the outstanding f/2.8-5.2 G Lens delivers superb image quality by minimising chromatic irregularity and producing beautiful background blurs.

The new Sweep Panorama function gives users a new way of capturing breathtaking panoramic scenes easily. By sweeping the camera in the desired direction (up/down/right/left), stunning landscape images can be easily captured by the DSC-HX1. Incorporating two new shooting modes, Hand-held Twilight and Anti Motion Blur, the camera also lets users shoot twilight scenes without a tripod and avoid subject blur even in low-light conditions respectively.

In a hallmark achievement for Cyber-shot, the DSC-HX1 is also the first model to offer 1080/30p HD movie shooting. Working with the extended zoom range on the H-series, the new movie recording function offers a wide range of composition possibilities from wide-angle to super telephoto. The DSC-HX1 also employs a high quality, high compression MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 movie format, allowing for easy sharing and playback on a BRAVIA HD TV via an HDMI cable. Moreover, the PHOTOMUSIC feature lets users easily create slideshows that combine movie files with still images.

Made for high quality performance, the new DSC-H20 features Sony’s exclusive1/2.3-type Super HAD CCD image sensor and a 10.1-megapixel resolution. Users can be ensured of smooth and rich colour reproduction of images even when printed on large A3+ size format. The DSC-H20 is also equipped with a retractable Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens which covers a wide range from 2cm macro to a 10x optical zoom, offering superior clarity for a compact camera. Like the DSC-HX1, the DSC-H20 is integrated with high-speed, high-quality BIONZ imaging processor, delivering high-resolution and sharp images. When shooting in dimly lit environments, users can additionally adjust for a higher maximum ISO setting combined with Dynamic Range Optimizer for improved image quality at reduced noise and outstanding true colour reproduction.

Compared to its predecessor DSC-H10, the DSC-H20 ups the ante with new features such as Intelligent Auto mode, HD movie recording and Gourmet mode. By activating the new Intelligent Auto mode, selectable via the camera’s mode dial, the camera automatically determines the optimal scene settings through Intelligent Scene Recognition. In this mode, users have a selection of eight settings available, from Backlight to Twilight, allowing users to capture crisp, clear images in difficult filming conditions without much setting adjustments. When users prefer capturing moments on videos instead of photos, the DSC-H20 is appropriately equipped to meet this demand with HD movie recording function at 1280 x 720 pixel resolution and 30 frames per second. Similar to the DSC-HX1, movies are then saved in high quality, high-compression MPEG-4 format, for users to easily share their favourite moments with family and friends. For users who love taking pictures of their food, the DSC-H20 also has a newly added Gourmet mode under convenient Scene Selection, to ensure mouthwatering food will always look as good as it tastes.

Other Improvements to Form & Function

The design of both new H-series cameras are substantially improved – the DSC-HX1 is equipped with the same flexible 3.0-inch Clear Photo LCD Plus display that can be tilted for viewing, making it much easier for users to shoot high- and low-angled photos. To ensure user-friendliness, the DSC-H20 sports a more compact chassis while camera operation on the DSC-HX1 has been vastly simplified with a new jog dial. When shooting in manual mode on the DSC-HX1, settings for the ISO, shutter speed, aperture and EV compensation, can all be easily adjusted with the jog dial easily. These features allow serious amateurs an intuitive shooting experience with a user interface similar to that on Sony’s range of α D-SLR cameras.

Retaining the benefits of the Cyber-shot range, the new H-series cameras are also equipped with popular Double Anti-blur Solution: Optical SteadyShot image stabiliser and ISO 3200 high sensitivity mode to ensure images are sharp and clear. Additionally, the cameras feature Improved Face Detection and Smile Shutter technology that automatically adjusts focus, exposure and white balance settings to capture desired smiles and faces accurately. New advancements in this area include Face Motion Detection and Selected-face Memory technology where the former reduces blur in the subject’s face, while the latter registers faces and optimises camera settings to ensure these faces are captured in their best light.

For easy editing, the H-series cameras are equipped with an in-camera retouching function to allow red-eye correction and simple cropping. Bundled with the cameras is Sony’s image management software Picture Motion Browser, which enables easy organisation and playback of recorded movies and still images. Various features such as a highlight index function displays thumbnails from various footage to enable easy playback, contributing to greater viewing pleasure. Searching for a particular person from among numerous pictures is also made easy with the Filter by Faces function. The software can pick out facial features from an image and conduct a search for similar faces, ensuring picture management remains hassle-free and fun.

The new Cyber-shot H-series cameras will be available in Asia Pacific from end April.
