Sony Introduces Greater Recording Prowess and Flexibility with New Handycam® Range
The latest additions feature advanced imaging technologies including the new “Exmor R” CMOS Sensor, high-performance Sony G Lens and Optical SteadyShot (Active Mode)

(Singapore, 8th January 2009) – Sony Electronics Asia Pacific expands its Handycam® camcorder offerings with 12 new additions in high definition (HD) and standard definition (SD). The high definition range showcases new HDD and Memory Stick models, while the standard definition range debuts new HDD, Memory Stick and DVD models. Featuring new and improved digital imaging technologies, such as the “Exmor R” image sensor and Optical SteadyShot (Active Mode), the latest Handycam® camcorders combine enhanced recording flexibility with exceptional image performance.

Advancing the digital imaging curve, Sony premieres the “Exmor R” CMOS Sensor that captures significantly clearer images even in low light conditions. Adopting back-illuminated technology, the sensor utilises incident light more efficiently, nearly doubling sensitivity in comparison to conventional camcorder models. The impressive boost in sensitivity also reduces noise and realises higher image quality and smooth movement in low light conditions such as night scenes. Combined with the BIONZ image processor, the new “Exmor R” CMOS Sensor delivers higher resolution still image recording and dual recording, as well as enhanced smooth slow recording.  Compatible with the new Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo “HX” (16GB), the storagemedia’s large storage capacity and high transfer speed make the capture and transfer of high-resolution videos and images extremely convenient.

“Sony values innovation and recognises the benefits that it brings our consumers. With the new Handycam® range, Sony has developed and enhanced our digital imaging technologies to deliver greatly improved video and image recording, in order to give our consumers the best camcorder experience possible. ” says Mr. Tatsuo Takahashi, General Manager, Digital Imaging Marketing Division, Sony Electronics Asia Pacific.

Handycam® AVCHD Hard Disk Drive series: HDR-XR520, HDR-XR500, HDR-XR200, HDR-XR100

The Handycam® XR-series is Sony’s latest range of AVCHD HDD camcorder models. The flagship Handycam® HDR-XR520 boasts a 240GB HDD storage capacity for up to 101 hours of Full HD movie recording, crowning it the largest capacity camcorder in the market today.

The HDR-XR520, HDR-XR500 and HDR-XR200 feature 12.0-megapixel still image recording, a Dual Recording mode that allows users to shoot up to 8.3-megapixel still images while recording video, and Smooth Slow Recording. Integrating new “Exmor R” CMOS Sensor and BIONZ image processor technologies, the AVCHD HDD camcorders also incorporate Sony’s unique G Lens – a sophisticated, high-performance lens that has been optimized to perfectly complement this advanced image sensor and processing technology. Ultimately, light sensitivity is doubled and the XR-series produces images of exceptionally high resolution with crisp, clear detail, even when shooting in low light environments. In addition, users can shoot smoother footage while walking or running with the new Optical SteadyShot (Active Mode), thanks to its 10 times wider camera shake correction angle than conventional Optical SteadyShot technology which significantly reduces camera shake in footage even when on the move.

With the new Highlight Playback feature, the camcorders can also automatically extract key highlight scenes recorded (based on features used such as Face Detection, Smile Shutter and Dual Recording) and play them with background music, giving users an effortless, convenient way to enjoy and share memories with friends and family. To facilitate sharing, the XR-series’ flexible HYBRID design allows users to conveniently choose to record movies on their preferred media – either HDD or Memory Stick. This eliminates the hassle of having to use a computer to transfer movies and photos between media.

Handycam® AVCHD Memory Stick series: HDR-CX100

Exuding style, the CX100 features three colour variations in a sleek, compact chassis. Merging form and function, the AVCHD Memory Stick Handycam® features 1920 x 1080i Full HD recording on its 8GB internal memory and direct movie recording on Memory Stick as well, thanks to the HYBRID design feature. The camcorder further incorporates Smile Shutter and Face Detection technology, Auto Backlight Correction, and the BIONZ image processor combined with “Exmor” CMOS Sensor to deliver 4.0-megapixel still image recording and Smooth Slow Recording at 240 fields per second.
