Recording Technology
Linear Scanning System
Linear recording system originated from conventional audio tape format, except that the cartridge has only one single tape-reel.
By having one instead of two reels, the space gained means more quantity of tape can be wound into one reel. Unique feature for this system is it's stationery head. On the surface of this head, there are head-chips for recording and reading.
When the cartridge is inserted into the drive, the tape will run along tape-guides (running straightly) and be spooled up by a take-up reel inside the drive. This has made the tape path very simple with a few guide rollers. In addition, little trouble occurs in the stochastic as there is only a few number of parts.
When the session of use is completed, the tape is fully returned to the cartridge prior to being ejected from drive.
This Linear system is used for DLT family, LTO series, and in field of consumer, Audio compact cassette like Walkman and so on.
