Helical Scanning Technology
Helical scanning system originated from video format and is now applied on data storage technologies.
In the drive, there is a "highlighting" point. The recording is done by head drum which rotates at the speed of several thousand rotations per minute. This mechanism can improve the recording density easily. As a result, it can achieve higher capacity and high transfer rates .
With head drum rotating at high speed, tape running speed can therefore be regulated. As such, tape tension can also be minimise with low tape load advantage.
This system reads and writes in one-way, with completion of reading/writing in one tape path. Therefore, it is good for tapes as it will have lesser media "contact counts" and low number of passes during writing or reading. (One time write/read equals to one count/pass)
The helical scan system is current used in DDS series, AIT series, S-AIT series, VXA series, MammothTape series and in the field of professional broadcasting like Betacam series, etc.
Recording method of Tape Storage
Advantages:- Easy to improve the recording density
- Low tape speed = Low tape tension
- Low tape load
- Lower media rubbing count
- It can write full capacity by 1 tape pass.
Video Tape format (Pro Media, Cons Media) DDS, AIT, S-AIT, DTF, Mammoth, etc)
