In order to store more data on a limited surface area, such as a disc, recording density must be increased. Increasing recording density of a disc is similar to "fitting more letters onto a sheet of paper by using a sharper pen and with more lines on it." With optical discs, the laser beam spot is the tip of the pen and the disc track pitch is the line spacing.
