The helical scanning system is the core building block on which the latest advances in S-AIT high-density recording and high-speed data transfer performance are built.

AME (Advanced Metal Evaporated) Tape - The Key to High-Density Recording and Reliability

The S-AIT format introduces a tape based data storage platform capable of storing up to 500GB native (up to 1.3TB compressed) with a fast 30MB/sec native transfer rate. AME technology reduces the need for periodic head cleaning thanks to its DLC protecting layer.

Innovative Cartridge Mechanism

Massive native 500GB capacity is made possible by the single reel cartridge with 1/2"tape width and 600 meters length. The same high recording density of AIT3 allows S-AIT to achieve high capacity. Introduced Leader Block which is the tape transportation method in drive and it makes to retry without tape loading defect.(Refer to transportation system illustration.)Newly created "Leader Block" tape transportation method eliminates potential misloading of tape.

A Migration Path to 4TB

Innovative AME tape and GMR head technology enable Sony to develop a four-migration path of S-AIT up to 4TB native capacity.
