This utility is only for use with the products identified and sold in India. Not all models are sold in all countries.
This utility upgrades the firmware to version M23.R.0158 and provides the following benefits:

  • Minor bugs were fixed.

Additional improvements over original firmware:

  • Improve the connectivity with the specific devices via HDMI cable. 

Check the Current Firmware Version 

  • Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the Home Theatre System is connected.
  • Power on the Home Theatre System.
  • Press the "HOME" button and wait until the Xross Media Bar™ menu is displayed on the television before proceeding.
  • Use the arrow keys on the Remote Control to select "Setup" – "System Settings", and then press the ENTER button.
  • Use the arrow keys to select "System Information", and then press the ENTER button.
  • The firmware version currently installed on the Home Theatre System will be listed on the television screen.

    System Information
         Software Version M23.R.0158

    If the last four digits of the version number are 0158 or higher, it is not necessary to install this firmware upgrade.

Important Notes

  • If you have not done so already, please check the current firmware version to determine if this firmware upgrade is needed for your Home Theatre System
  • WARNING!! Please follow the upgrade instructions carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may interrupt the upgrade process and may cause the Home Theatre System to be unresponsive or to require repair.
  • WARNING!! Do not power off the Home Theatre System or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Loss of power during the installation of the firmware upgrade may cause the Home Theatre System to be unresponsive or to require repair.
  • Recommended operating system for the computer that will download the firmware upgrade:
    Windows 7, Windows Vista or Windows XP is recommended.
  • In order to perform the firmware upgrade, it is necessary to have the system correctly connected to a compatible television.
  • It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.

Download and save into USB memory Instructions

  1. Download the UPDATA_M23R0158.zip file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
  2. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and verify that the size of the UPDATA_M23R0158.zip file is 109,132,441 bytes.
    a. Right-click the UPDATA_M23R0158.zip file, and click "Properties".
    b. On the "UPDATA_M23R0158.zip Properties" screen, verify that the "Size:" listed is "104 MB (109,132,441 bytes)".
    Note: The "Size on disk:" listed may be different. That is normal.
    c. If the file size is different than the "109,132,441 bytes", please download the UPDATA_M23R0158.zip file again.
  3. Double-click the UPDATA_M23R0158.zip file. Then, extract the ZIP file.
  4. The extracted files will be named "MSB23-FW.BIN”,“MSB23-FW.ID”, " MSB23-FW_MB.BIN” and “MSB23-FW_MB.ID”
  5. Save the decompressed files (4 files) to the root directory of USB, the folder name should be “UPDATE”.

Version Upgrade Instructions 
The instructions below are for how to install the firmware upgrade using USB Memory.
Firmware upgrade Instructions
WARNING!! Do not power off the system or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Doing so may damage the system to the point of requiring repair.
WARNING!! Do not press any buttons, except as instructed, until the upgrade is complete. Doing so may damage the system to the point of requiring repair.
Note: The firmware upgrade process takes a minimum of 10 minutes.

  1. Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the Home Theatre System is connected.
  2. Power on the Home Theatre System
  3. At the Xross Media Bar™ menu, use the arrow keys on the Remote Control to select "Setup”- "System Settings", and then press the ENTER button.
  4. Use the arrow keys to select "Quick Start Mode" and make sure that the "Quick Start Mode" is set to "Off".
    Note: If the "Quick Start Mode" is set to "On", change the setting to "Off". Otherwise, the firmware upgrade may not succeed.
  5. Insert USB that contain the 4 image files.
  6. At the Xcross Media Bar™ menu, use the arrow keys on the Remote Control to select “Setup” – “Software Update” and the press the ENTER button.
  7. The message, [“Update files found in the USB memory. Do you want to update the software? Current version M23.R.xxxx New version M23.R.xxxx. Do not turn off the power or remove the USB memory during the update.”] is displayed on the television. Press OK to start updates the firmware.
  8. While the upgrade is installed the message "UPDATE" is displayed on the front panel display.
  9. The firmware upgrade is complete when "DONE" appears on the front panel display. Then, the system is turned off automatically.
    WARNING!! Do not operate or power off the system until this message is displayed. Doing so may result in your system being unresponsive and requiring repair.
  10. Power on the unit and check the current firmware version to confirm that the upgrade has successfully installed.
    Note: If the last four digits of the version number are 0158, the firmware upgrade was successful.

Check the Current Firmware Version

  1. Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the Home Theatre System is connected.
  2. Power on the Home Theatre System.
  3. Press the "HOME" button and wait until the Xross Media Bar™ menu is displayed on the television before proceeding.
  4. Use the arrow keys on the Remote Control to select "Setup" – "System Settings", and then press the ENTER button.
  5. Use the arrow keys to select "System Information", and then press the ENTER button.
  6. The firmware version currently installed on the Home Theatre System will be listed on the television screen.

    System Information
         Software Version M23.R.0158

    If the last four digits of the version number are 0158, the firmware upgrade was successful.

Update via USB Memory FAQ

  1. "UPDATE" and "ERROR" is displayed on the front panel display. 
    Please perform the following procedure:
    1. Disconnect the AC cord, then plug the AC cord again.
    2. Power on the Home Theatre System.
    3. Follow the Update via USB Memory Instructions again.
    If the issue persists after performing the upgrade again, please contact Sony.
  2. The power was shut down during the upgrade process. 
    Power on the Home Theatre System, and then follow the Update via USB Memory again.
  3. When I double click on the UPDATA_M23R0158.zip  upgrade file I downloaded from the upgrade web site, the "MSB23-FW.BIN”, “MSB23-FW.ID”, "MSB23-FW_MB.BIN” and “MSB23-FW_MB.ID” files are not created.
    The download may have failed. Delete the downloaded file and follow the steps in the Download the Firmware and save into USB memory section to create a new upgrade disc
  4. The firmware upgrade process is still not finished after running for more than 30 minutes.
