Why is the transmission rate of the modem different when the VAIO computer is connected to an AC adaptor?

The transmission rate of the modem is different when the VAIO computer is connected to an AC adaptor.

This is due to the specifications of the modem. The fluctuation (noise) of household power supply travels through the AC adaptor and may affect the performance of the modem. Hence, the communication speed of the modem becomes slower. However, when the VAIO computer works on the battery, there is no interference from the power supply. Therefore, the performance level of the modem increases.
