How do I execute FDISK on Windows Me?

How do I change a partition size?

Sony is not in the position to guarantee normal operation of your computer if you change the partition size with the following procedure.
Should problems occur to your machine due to execution of the procedure, please recover it to the originally shipped state using the Recovery CD-ROM. Sony shall not assume responsibility for any possible loss of data or any other problems.

To execute FDISK.
--Note--
The procedures below is based on windows that actually appear at the time of FDISK execution. They may vary a little, depending on the models. You may, however, be able to carry them out
basically on similar windows.

# To change the configurations of partitions including the C drive
--Note--
Carrying out the following procedures deletes all data. Please ensure that you back up all important data before execution.

* When you have created a startup disk of Windows Me, execute the procedure from step 7.
1) Click [Start] -> [Settings] -> [Control Panel].
2) Double-click on the [Add/Remove Programs] icon on the [Control Panel].
3) Click the [Startup Disk] tab on the [Add/Remove Programs Properties] dialog box.
4) Click the [Create Disk] button.
5) When the message prompting you to insert a floppy disk appears, insert a formatted floppy disk into the floppy disk drive and click [OK]. The writing of data to the floppy disk begins.
* All contents of the floppy disk are erased.
6) When the startup disk has been created, click [OK] to close the [Add/Remove Programs Properties] dialog box.
7) Insert the "Windows Me Startup Disk" that was created in step 6 into the floppy disk drive and restart your computer.
8) The contents of the floppy disk are read and Windows Millennium Startup Menu appears. Select a startup method displayed on the menu.
* Type "2" or "3" next to [Enter a choice] and press the [Enter] key.
9) When [A:\>] appears, enter "fdisk" and press the [Enter] key.
10) When the message [Do you wish to enable large disk support? (Y/N)] appears, enter "Y" and press the [Enter] key.
11) The [FDISK Options] window appears.
12) Delete the logical MS-DOS partition. Enter [3] (Delete partition or Logical DOS Drive) on the [FDISK Options] window and press the [Enter] key.
13) Enter [3] (Delete Logical DOS Drivers in the Extended DOS Partition) and press the [Enter] key.
14) The [Delete Logical DOS Drive(s) in the Extended DOS Partition] window appears.
1. Enter the alphabet of the drive that you want to delete and press the [Enter] key.
2. Enter Volume Label and press the [Enter] key. If no volume label is available, leave it as it is and press the [Enter] key.
3. When the message [Are you sure (Y/N)?] appears, enter "Y" and press the [Enter] key.
15) "All logical drives deleted in the Extended DOS Partition" appears. (If you have created logical MS-DOS partitions except the D drive, repeat steps 14 - 15 to delete all logical MS-DOS partitions.)
16) Press the [Esc] key. "No logical drives defined" appears.
17) Press the [Esc] key to go back to the [FDISK Options] window.
18) Delete Extended MS-DOS Partition. Enter [3] on the [FDISK Options] window (Delete partition or Logical MS-DOS drive) and press the [Enter] key.
19) Enter [2] (Delete Extended DOS Partition) and press the [Enter] key.
20) The [Delete Extended DOS Partition] window appears. When the mesage [Warning! Data in the deleted Extended DOS Partition will be lost. Do you wish to continue (Y/N)?] appears, enter "Y" and press the [Enter] key.
21) The [Extended DOS Partition deleted] message appears.
22) Press the [Esc] key to return to the [FDISK Options] window.
23) Delete Primary MS-DOS Partition. Enter [3] (Delete partition or Logical DOS Drive) on the [FDISK Options] window and press the [Enter] key.
24) Enter [1] (Delete Primary DOS Partition) and press the [Enter] key.
25) The [Delete Primary DOS Partition] message appears.
1. Enter the drive number [1] you want to delete and press the [Enter] key.
2. Enter Volume Label and press the [Enter] key. If no volume label is available, leave it as it is and press the [Enter] key.
3. When the message [Are you sure (Y/N)?] appears, enter "Y" and press the [Enter] key.
26) The [Primary DOS Partition deleted] message appears.
27) Press the [Enter] key to return to the [FDISK Options] window.
28) Create Primary MS-DOS Partition. Enter [1] (Create DOS partition or Logical DOS Drive) on the [FDISK Options] window and press the [Enter] key.
29) Enter [1] (Create Primary DOS Partition) and press the [Enter] key. "Verifying drive integrity" starts.
30) * To assign all partitions to the C drive
After verifying the drive integrity, the message [Do you wish to use the maximum available size for a Primary DOS Partition and make the partition active (Y/N)?] appears. Enter "Y" and press the [Enter] key. When the verifying of drive integrity has been completed, proceed to step 50.

* To create more than one drives
After verifying the drive integrity, the message [Do you wish to use the maximum available size for a Primary DOS Partition and make the partition active (Y/N)?] appears. Enter "N" and press the [Enter] key.

31) After verifying the drive integrity, set a size to be assigned to C drive. When the message [Enter partition size in Mbytes or percent of disk space (%) to create a Primary Dos Partition] appears, enter a number (Mbytes) that you want to set or a percent of disk space together with "%", and press the [Enter] key.
32) The [Primary DOS Partition Created] message appears. The primary DOS partition is now created.
33) Press the [Esc] key to return to the [FDISK Options] window.
34) Set an active partition. Enter [2] (Set active partition) on the [FDISK Options] window and press the [Enter] key.
35) To make C drive active, enter "1" and press the [Enter] key.
36) The [Partition 1 made active] message appears. Now C drive is active.
37) Press the [Esc] key to return to the [FDISK Options] window.
38) Create Extended DOS Partition. Enter [1] (Create DOS Partition or Logical DOS Drive) on the [FDISK Options] window and press the [Enter] key.
39) Enter [2] (Create Extended DOS Partition) and press the [Enter] key.
40) To assign all partitions to Extended DOS Partition after verifying the drive integrity, press the [Enter] key.
41) The [Extended DOS Partition created] message appears. The extended DOS partition is now created.
42) Press the [Esc] key.
43) The [No logical drives defined] message appears and verifying of the drive integrity starts.
44) Set a logical drive.
* To create 2 (C and D) drives
To set all partitions to the logical drive, press the [Enter] key. Proceed to step 49.

* To create 3 or more drives
Set the size to be assigned to D drive. Enter a number (Mbytes) that you want to set or a percent of disk space (excluding the size of the C drive) together with "%", and press the [Enter] key.

45) Verifying drive integrity starts and the message [Logical DOS Drive created, drive letters changed or added] appears. D drive is now created.
46) Set the size to be assigned to E drive. Enter a number (Mbytes) that you want to set or a percent of the disk space (excluding the size of C drive) together with "%", and press the [Enter] key. To assign all the remaining space to E drive, press the [Enter] key.
47) If all the remaining space has not been assigned to E drive, repeat steps 45 - 47 to create additional drives. When the message [All available space in the Extended DOS Partition is assigned to logical drivers] appears, proceed to the next step.
48) Press the [Esc] key to return to the [FDISK Options] window.
49) Press the [Esc] key to exit FDISK.
50) When the message [You MUST restart your system for your changes to take effect.] appears, press the [Esc] key.
Now, the assigning of partitions is completed

# To divide the current D drive into 2 or more partitions
--Note--
If the following procedure is executed, all data on the drives except C drive will be erased. Please ensure that you back up all important data before execution.
In addition, if you make mistakes in the procedure, all data including that on the C drive will be erased. Please be careful when carrying out the procedure.

1) Click [Start] -> [Programs] -> [Accessories] -> [MS-DOS Prompt] to start MS-DOS Prompt.
2) Enter "fdisk" and press the [Enter] key.
3) When the message [Your computer has a disk larger than 512MB. Do you wish to enable large disk support (Y/N)?] appears, enter "Y" and press the [Enter] key.
4) [FDISK Options] appears. Enter [3] (Delete partition or Logical DOS Drive) and press the [Enter] key.
5) Enter [3] (Delete Logical DOS Driver(s) in the Extended DOS partition) and press the [Enter] key.
6) Enter "D" (the alphabet of the drive whose partition you want to delete) and press the [Enter] key. Enter Volume Label of the drive (if no volume label is available, leave it as it is) and press the [Enter] key. When the message [Are you sure (Y/N)?] appears, enter "Y" and press the [Enter] key.
7) When the message [D: Drive deleted] appears, press the [Esc] key.
8) When the message [No logical drives defined] appears, press the [Esc] key.
9) Enter [1] (Create DOS partition or Logical DOS Drive) and press the [Enter] key.
10) Enter [3] (Create Logical DOS Drives in the Extended DOS partition) and press the [Enter] key.
11) The [No logical drives defined] message appears and verifying of the drive integrity starts. You have to wait until the verification is completed. (This will take time ranging from a few minutes to several minutes.)
12) The message [Enter logical drive size in Mbytes or percent of disk space (%)] appears. Now, set the size you want to assign to D drive. Enter a number (Mbytes) that you want to set or a percent of the disk space (excluding the size of C drive) together with "%" and press the [Enter] key.
13) "Logical DOS Drive created, drive letters changed or added" appears. D drive is now created.
14) Set the size to be assigned to E drive. Enter a number (Mbytes) that you want to set or a percent of the disk space (excluding the size of C drive) together with "%", and press the [Enter] key. To assign all the remaining space to E drive, press the [Enter] key.
15) If all the remaining space has not been assigned to E drive, repeat steps 13 - 14 to create additional drives. When the message [All available space in the Extended DOS Partition is assigned to logical drivers] appears, proceed to the next step.
16) The message [All available space in the Extended DOS Partition is assigned to logical drives.] appears and the dividing processes of drives have been completed. Press the [Esc] key.
17) The [FDISK Options] window appears. Press the [Esc] key to exit FDISK.
18) When the message [You must restart your system for your changes to take effect. Any drives you have created or changed must be formatted after you restart the system.] appears, press the [Esc] key.
19) Exit FDISK and return to the MS-DOS Prompt window. Enter "exit" and press the [Enter] key.
20) When you exit MS-DOS Prompt, restart Windows.
21) After Windows is restarted, double-click on the [My Computer] icon.
22) Right-click on the [D drive] icon and click [Format].
23) The [Format] window appears. Click the [Full] option button in the [Format Type] box and click the [Start] button.
24) When the message [This drive is either a hard disk or a large removable disk. Formatting it will destroy all files currently on the drive. Are you sure you want to format this drive?] appears, click the [OK] button.
25) Formatting starts.
26) When formatting is complete, a report showing Format Results appears. Click the [Close] button.
27) When the message [Windows has formatted this disk. Before using it, run ScanDisk and choose the [Thorough] option to verify that data can be stored reliably on all areas of the disk.] appears, click the [OK] button.
28) When the [Windows Help] window appears, click [x] (close) to close the [Windows Help] window.
29) Click the [Close] button on the [Format] window.
30) Format E drive using steps 21 - 28.
31) Execute a thorough check on the drives that you have formatted using ScanDisk.
